Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner

Here's a recent sketch I did after that killer performance Newt delivered in the debate leading up to the South Carolina primary. He literally roasted John King, Dean Martin style. If only Red Foxx were there it would have been 100% entertainment.

This pen and ink sketch is titled: "no one puts baby in a corner." Not John King, not a crazy ex, not no one. This guy means business it seems. Other subtitles include: "marriage woes" and "closet bodies."

In other news, I am obsessed with this song!

Sketch

Here's a sketch I doodled out a day or so ago. It's for a guide Amy and I are working on with our fabulous friend Lindsey Bro. It's a guide to recharging your life in the New Year and it will be rife with sarcasm and sagely advice on how to improve your existence (quite a ominous task if you think about it).

Mazel Tov, DumbleDirk

[Portrait of Mr. Nowitzski illustrated digitally by Jennifer Hood of Hoodzpah Art + Graphics. Progress of portrait shown below | All rights reserved!]

Well, he finally did it.
With his cohort of almost forgotten and un-ringed teammates,
Dirk finally got one.
They all finally got theirs.
At least I can take solace in the fact that Lakers got swept by the new reigning NBA Champs.

Here's a digi-doodle for you, Dirk.

New Project: Collaborating with Blythe Hill on an Adventure Children's Book

[Original drawing for Kyle and the Kite, a book by Blythe Hill. Illustration by Jennifer Hood. All rights reserved!]

So my lovely friend and former colleague, Blythe Hill (you can see her blog here) , is in her Masters program for literature at Cal State Fullerton. Her thesis? To write and publish three children's books. That's the goal at least, and she is well on her way!

Blythe asked me to illustrate one of the three books about 4 or more months ago, and I was honored and stoked to be involved! Blythe's ideas were unique and adventurous and had a whimsicality reminiscent of my favorite kid's book author as a child, Roald Dahl. The story that I am assigned to illustrate follows a boy named Kyle and his adventures and lessons had in the clouds, as he rides a rather rebellious kite above the world.

I'm so excited to see where this heads.
Here's one of the initial concept drawings I did to show Blythe the style I was thinking.

Speaking of youth and flying: the eternal rebellious, and delightfully mischievous soul: Peter Pan. These old '50s Disney intros with their gramaphone-sounding soundtracks are always so great. The typography and everything. Brilliant. My fave is probably 101 Dalmatians intro. But this is close.

The Neverending Story that is The Great Hoodzpah Brand Charade

[Logo idea for my sis and I's freelance design collab, Hoodzpah Art + Graphics | by Jennifer hood | All rights reserved]

Amy and I's tireless attempts to find a logo and brand look that defines Hoodzpah (our freelance design collab), continues on.
Like the flashbulbs and jokes strobing and floating around Senator Weiner,
like that agile ogre Dirk Nowitzki in the 4th quarter,
like the resilient Britney Spears,
it continues on.

Here was an idea I came up with today.
We'll see what we actually end up with for our final logo.
Probably something super simple so as not to tie ourselves down too much look-wise.

In other news, I had my first day working at Churm Media today!
They're the outlet responsible for OC Metro, OC Family, and other great local OC publications you've seen everywhere in this splendid county of ours.

Song of the day:
"Delight in Temptation" by Wild Palms. I am so obsessed with this right now.
In a good way.
Not a Rosie O'Donnell on Barbara Streisand way.
More like a Spike Lee on Kobe way.

Tonight: A Snappy Date with Jack Nicholson, Little Hurricane and DJ Jacques Renault

[Flier for tonights CAMM event at Mesa. Should be fun fun]

Here's a repost of a blog I did for Locale Magazine's website:

All dressed up with no place to go tonight?
How about a retro date with a fedora-ed 1972 Jack Nicholson?
Roman Polanski’s film noir flavored Chinatown, a film that is argued by some critics to be the best detective movie ever made, will be showing tonight at Mesa Lounge in Costa Mesa (just behind The Camp).

The movie screening is a part of the Cinema, Art, Music, Movement (CAMM), a culture project created and presented by Sophisticates United Network (SUN). SUN is a unique, style-rich event and marketing company based out of Newport Beach, and demmed if they can’t through a good party with panache. Their events ooze with savvy style. Tonight’s CAMM event will showcase the film screening, as well as a healthy dose of melody and beats. A live performance by Little Hurricane, a gorgeous guy-girl duo singing earnest folk-inspired tunes, and a live set by DJ Jacques Renault. The night is sure to be swarming with eccentric individuals, inspiring wardrobe sightings, transcendental drinks (Mesa’s bar is a delight), and a well-rounded cultural ensemble.

The festivities start tonight at 6pm, and sorry youngsters, this is for the 21+ crowd. RSVP at info@sophisticatesunited.com. Entrance into the event is free before 9pm, $10 after for RSVPers, and $20 for the non-respondez (without thanks).

Mesa is located at 725 Baker Street, Costa Mesa. Phone number: (714) 557-6700.

Here’s a taste of what’s flowering tonight:

Wedding Invitation - Designed by Hoodzpah

[Custom wedding invitations by Jennifer Hood of Hoodzpah Art and Graphics, for liz and tim Stevenson! | All rights reserved]

As I mentioned previously, I went to a wedding recently.
A lovely barn, hoedown in michigan kind of wedding.
Open bar with plenty of "Mint Juleps"
and "Dark and Stormies."
Oh, and cigars.

It was my childhood friend Liz Logsdon,
and her new best friend Tim Stevenson.
It was lovely!
My poor-but-talented man's gift to them,
was to design their invitations for them.

Liz had this quaint idea of doing silhouettes of her and Tim.
It was so fun working with her because she wanted to keep the invites lively
and unique,
while classy and traditional.

The invitation package included:
A cover story of their love affair.
An official invitation.
A details card.
A RSVP card.
She included a Beatles song quote in the invites, "It's real love."
Her sister Sadie sang a beautiful rendition of the song as they walked down the aisle.
I must also mention that the Dr. Seuss poem, "Oh! the places you'll go" and Adam Sandler's Wedding Singer ballad for Drew Barrymore, "I Wanna Grow Old With You," were involved in Liz's wedding (is anyone else obsessed with John Lovitz in that movie?). So solid.

Oh, last thing, they had a fab and oh so wise poem read at the ceremony. It was titled, "To Love Is Not To Possess" by James Kavanaugh. I heartily agree, freedom is the most beautiful thing about love. It's meant to be shared not caged, people!
Stepping off the soap box now.

This was the result of Liz and I's joint creative efforts for her wedding invites.
